Bristol City Women

Ashton Gate · Bristol
4th · Super League Two Subway Players Cup

Bristol City Women have one of the more tangled origin stories in the English game — one that begins with their city rivals. The club was founded in 1998 as Bristol Rovers Women, through a merger with the Welsh side Cable-Tel LFC, and climbed through the South West Combination into the Premier League. In 2005 it was renamed Bristol Academy, reflecting a new partnership with a local sports college, and under that name enjoyed its golden era: two Women's FA Cup finals, a WSL runners-up finish in 2013, and several Champions League campaigns. The club was renamed a final time to Bristol City ahead of the 2016 season, switching its traditional blue for the Robins' red, and went on to spend five seasons in the Women's Super League.
