Plymouth Argyle WFC

Plymouth Argyle Women have one of the more charming origin stories in the women's game. The club was formed in 1975 out of a five-a-side league at the Mayflower Leisure Centre, when two teams merged to enter an eleven-a-side tournament in Newquay and named themselves the Plymouth Pilgrims. The tournament's success launched them into competitive football, and their standout early achievement came quickly — reaching the quarter-finals of the Women's FA Cup in both 1976 and 1977. The club briefly played as Saltash Pilgrims around the turn of the millennium, reflecting a groundshare in Cornwall, before being invited to compete under the Plymouth Argyle banner for the 2001–02 season. Nicknamed the Pilgrims and the Greens like the men's club, they're rooted in the city through the PAFC Community Trust and remain the leading women's side in the far south-west.
