Sunderland AFC Women

Sunderland AFC Women began in 1989 as a five-a-side team called The Kestrels, playing their first match that July against Darlington Ladies and winning the WFA Yorkshire and Humberside League in 1990. Through the following decade they competed in the Northern Premier under a string of names — Cowgate, RTM Newcastle and Blyth Spartans Kestrels — before merging with an independent Sunderland Ladies side and the men's club in 2000 to become Sunderland Women, on the back of promotion to the top-tier National Division. Nicknamed the Lasses and playing at Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground, the club is renowned for its academy, which produced England internationals Beth Mead, Jill Scott, Steph Houghton and Lucy Bronze — a remarkable pipeline of talent. In 2024 they became fully independent from the men's club, and in 2026 the Bay Collective ownership group acquired a majority stake, opening a new era for the historic North East side.
